SERVICES TO BE PLANNED FOR NICEVILLE FATHER, DAUGHTER
July 26, 2010 - NW FLORIDA DAILY NEWS

NICEVILLE — Monday morning, 16-year-old Hannah Harris should have been baking brownies and preparing to lead incoming freshmen through their orientation at Niceville High School. Instead, her mother was planning her funeral.

"I don't even know where to begin," Diane Harris, Hannah's mother, said in a phone interview. "She was a precious gift from God."

The rising junior died Sunday from injuries sustained in a crash Friday afternoon in Louisiana. Her father, William "Tim" Harris, passed away at the scene. He was a vice president at L3 Communications for Crestview Aerospace.

"We're all struggling right now, but we're relying on the Lord to get us through this," Diane said from Texas, where she was planning her husband's and daughter's funerals.

Hannah was driving along Interstate 20 in Lincoln Parish, La., when she attempted to pass a truck and, according to a Louisiana State Patrol press release, swerved her family's Suburban to the right "for unknown reasons" and hit the truck. The impact ran both vehicles off the road, and Harris' vehicle struck several trees before stopping.

Her 46-year-old mother and her 18-year-old sister, Bethany, were in the back seat at the time of the crash and taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.

Troopers said they believe the driver and occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

News of the loss shook Niceville High.

Hannah was a leader in her school and involved in the Interact Club, a service organization. She took both honors and Advanced Placement courses, but more than anything she was a positive person and an example to her classmates.

"This is a huge loss, a huge loss to her friends," said Amanda Brady, Hannah's AP European history teacher. "To see her smiling face — she always had a smile — we're really going to miss that.

"There's going to be a gap here that's not going to be able to be filled."

The blonde-haired girl is described by everyone as a giver. Diane said Monday afternoon her daughter's organs were donated. The previous day, the church body of First Baptist Church of Niceville prayed for the families who would be receiving Hannah's organs.

"We're praying they will go to needy families on the transplant waiting list," Diane said. "Through all of this, we just want glory and honor to be given to God. Without him we would have no hope."

Diane and Tim celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary earlier this year. She said her family was on their way home from Texas where they had been visiting family when the accident occurred.

"My husband was the most godly man and the most godly father," Diane said. "He loved his children with every ounce of his being."

Diane said she and Bethany have stayed strong solely through relying on their faith. She tearfully read Psalms 91: 1-2.

"Through this earthly tragedy we are seeking that God will be glorified," Diane said. "I know life will be changed, but it is our prayer that he will be glorified through all this."

A memorial service has been planned at First Baptist Church of Niceville. The date and time has not been confirmed.

"They were both so godly, so faithful to God," Diane said through tears. "They were kind, caring and loving.

"More than anything, they were passionate about the Lord's work. Through all of this, God will receive glory and honor."

NICEVILLE MAN, DAUGHTER KILLED IN LOUISIANA WRECK
July 25, 2010 - NW Florida Daily News

LINCOLN PARISH, LA. — A wreck on Interstate 20 claimed the lives of two Niceville residents Friday afternoon.

William "Tim" Harris, 51, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lincoln Parish Coroner's Office. He was the front seat passenger of the family's white Chevrolet Surburban.

Tim's daughter, Hannah, 16, died Sunday of injuries sustained from the crash. She was driving the family's Surburban at the time of the accident.

Hannah Harris was traveling east in the inside lane near milepost 97 and overtaking a 2002 GMC truck pulling a livestock trailer. "For unknown reasons," she abruptly swerved to the right and hit the truck, according to a press release from the Louisiana State Police Troop F.

Both vehicles then ran off the south side of the road and entered the tree line. The Suburban struck several trees before coming to rest.

Louisiana State Police troopers responded to the crash at about 3 p.m.

Hannah Harris was transported to the LSU-Shreveport hospital with critical injuries. A spokesman for Troop F confirmed Sunday night that she had died.

Two back seat passengers in the Suburban, Dianne Harris, 46, and Bethany Harris, 18, were transported to Lincoln General Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The GMC and its trailer also struck several trees before coming to rest. The driver of the GMC, identified as 40-year-old Nancy "Becky" White from Simsboro, La., was taken to Lincoln General Hospital with minor injuries.

The passenger in the GMC, Jessica Brunston, 17, was also taken to Lincoln General with moderate injuries.

Three cows in the trailer were killed in the crash.

Troopers believe that the occupants and drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. "Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, but routine toxicology tests are pending," the media release said.

No citations have been issued and the crash remains under investigation.
