FAIRMONT - Services for Harriett M. Aakre, 91, of Fairmont, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont. Visitation will continue on Saturday from noon until the time of the service at the church.

Burial will be in Center Chain Cemetery. Harriett passed away on Monday evening, Feb. 15, 2010, at Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont.

Harriett Mildred (Taplin) Aakre was born on July 19, 1918, in Silver Lake Township, Martin County, Minn. She was the daughter of George and Martha (Hamilton) Taplin. Harriett received her education in Fairmont public schools and graduated from Fairmont High School in 1939.

On April 2, 1939, Harriett was united in marriage to Harold Aakre in Storm Lake, Iowa. The couple resided in the Fairmont area and were blessed with two children. During the war, Harriett worked at Fairmont Canning Company. She later spent her days caring for her family on the farm. She and Harold shared 46 years of marriage before Harold passed away in 1985.

Harriett was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont. She was active with the ladies aid and assisted in making quilts with her church circle. Harriett loved to volunteer her time and talents. She was a Charter Member of Martin County ARC as well as being an ARC state officer. She was active with volunteering with the Special Olympics and was an advocate for the disabled. Harriett was also involved in her community as a 4-H leader and former member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

During her free time, Harriett enjoyed tending to her garden and flowers, camping with Harold, doing word puzzles and crafts and visiting with friends. She especially loved taking trips "down home" around Silver Lake where she could see birds and wild flowers. She also had a special place in her heart for dogs.

Left to cherish her memory include her son, Richard Aakre and his wife, Diane, of Redwood Falls, Minn.; daughter, Jeanne Aakre of Sherburn; grandson, Steven Aakre of Renville; brother, Eugene Taplin of Cohasset, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Mickey Gulla of Fairmont, and Edna Aakre of Albert Lea; many many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Along with her parents, George and Martha Taplin, Harriett is preceded in death by her husband, Harold Aakre; a daughter in infancy; a granddaughter in infancy; siblings, Frank, Howard, John, Norma, Lois, Nellie, and Leola.
