Graduated from the College of Charleston in 1835. During the Civil War he enlisted as a private at the age of fifty-four for twelve months in Capt. F. T. Miles's company, Charleston Battalion; He later served as a volunteer aide on staff of General Bragg and was paroled as Theodore D. Jervey, A.D.C. in accordance with the terms of the Military Convention entered into on the 26th day of April, 1865, between General Joseph E. Johnston, commanding the Confederate army, and Major General W. T. Sherman, Commanding the United States army, in North Carolina, dated at Greensboro, North Carolina May 2, 1865.
