Elderly Faith Pair Die in 1-Car Mishap
Newell - An elderly Faith couple became the state's 234th and 235th traffic fatalities Monday morning when their car crashed into a tree on the north edge of Newell. The victims have been identified as John Bachman, 72, and his wife, Hilda, 65. Mrs. Bachman was driving the car which failed to negotiate the turn here which forms the junction of Highways 79 and 212. Officers said Mrs. Bachman apparently did not notice the junction as she approached on Highway 212 from the east. There were no skid marks and the car struck the tree in a yard about 50 feet from the center of the intersection when she tried to turn south. Mrs. Bachman was believed killed instantly and her husband died within a few minutes. The car was demolished. The two deaths boost the South Dakota toll to 235 for they year, compared with 178 for all of 1957. -From The Daily Republic, Mitchell SD, Dec. 30, 1958
