Diedrich was the son of Menke Menkens and his second wife, Anna Margaretha Fastje of Almsloh, Oldenburg. He immigrated aboard the Donau from Bremen to New York in 1879. After living in New York City for awhile, he moved to Guttenberg, New Jersey. He and his wife raised five daughters and one son. Diedrich worked as a cigar maker while in the United States. After he died, his wife Hermine moved to Suffolk County and his body was brought from New Jersey to Edgewood Cemetery about 1921.
