Retired USCG.
Beloved husband of almost 50 years to Sue J Perkins; father to Margaret Whitfield Haven and Patricia Whitfield McDonald (Terrence); revered grandfather known as 'Captain' to his 9 grandchildren. He died the day after Thanksgiving and on Sue's birthday. Edwin was the only son of Rev. Andrew Lucas Whitfield and Helen Brank Davidson. Edwin ran away from home and joined the US Navy (illegally) at 17 to see the world. Was honorably discharged a year later and married his childhood sweetheart. Joining the Merchant Marines he was later sought out by the USCG due to his harbor pilot's license and served honorably and well until medically retired in 1946, when he was the ranking officer in the Alaska Territory.
He was christened Edwin Clopton Whitfield but hated the Clopton part and legally changed it to Charles. Because both sons-in-law were servicemen, they called him 'Captain,' a practice adopted by all nine grandchildren.
