Mrs. Walkup's parents moved from North Carolina to Montgomery county, Indiana, when she was five years old. In ___ with her parents, she came to Jasper county, Missouri, and later to Platte county, where her parents both died. Here March 23, 1848, she was married to her lately deceased husband, James Walkup Sr.
Soon after their marriage they came to Holt county, in the Missouri bottom below Craig. Remaining here some eleven years, they moved to a farm just east of Craig, and a year or two after settled on the home place at Walkup's Grove. In 1862, they returned to the farm east of Craig and again in the early 70's moved to the Grove, which was her home during all these years, except about four years during which she lived in Fairfax. After the death of her husband here, she returned to the old home place with her son, James.
To them were born these children: George Walkup, of Fairfax, Albert r. Walkup, of Rock Port; Mrs. Mary Lawrence, deceased; Mrs. Sarah Kelly, Mrs. Eliza Carter, of Dale township; Mrs. Martha Bryan, deceased; Miss Caroline Walkup, deceased; James R. Walkup, of Dale township.
In early life Mrs. Walkup became a member of the M.E. Church, south. But owing to her long distance from any organized body of that order, for many years she was not in connection with any religious society. She, however, retained her Christian hope and Christian integrity until the end. As a wife and mother, she was devoted to the interest of her home and children, as a neighbor, she was kind and obliging. -R.M.R. in Fairfax Forum.
