Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Figgins who live four miles southeast of Strasburg, had the unusual distinction of having 14 living children when they marked their sixtieth wedding anniversary recently. Mr. and Mrs. Figgins were married 60 years ago, Oct 28 in 1889. The ceremony was performed at the courthouse in Shelbyville, and they recall that Alf Allen was county clerk at the time. Through an error in the clerk's office, their marriage license was stamped Oct. 29 instead of Oct. 28 the date their marriage took place. Before their marriage, Mrs. Figgins was Miss Laura Bridges, daughter of Jim and Nancy Bridges. Mr. Figgins is the son of Fielden and Sophia Figgins. He will be 82 in December and she will be 76 in March. Mr. Figgins is in good health, but Mrs. Figgins has been confined to her bed by diabetes for almost a year. Two years ago, when the Figgins marked their fifty-eighth anniversary, was the big occasion. Some 200 friends and relatives gathered to honor them, and all but one of their 14 children were present. The only who could not come was Eldon, who lives in California. The entire family was raised on the 80 acre farm where Mr. and Mrs. Figgins still live. Except for a short time at Kingman, they have lived on the farm ever since their marriage. The first two children were born in a log house, hewn from timber on the Wabash river. Mr. Figgins' grandfather put up the log house and then moved it to the present Figgins farm. One of the sons, Gaylord, lives on the old home place just north of Mr. and Mrs. Figgins, whose mailing address is Trowbridge. Mr. and Mrs. Figgins have 33 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
