The son of Benjamin Cimmers and Margaretha Kolph, John came to the United States with his family when he was still an infant in 1861. He became a naturalized American citizen in 1876.

John married Annie Wiener on 18 Jul 1886 in Pleasant Valley, Grundy County, Iowa. They were the parents of 5 children. The family moved back to Calhoun County, Illinois in the late 1880's.

During his early years, John worked as a farmer, carpenter and plasterer. He later went into law enforcement and served as a police officer in Brussels and Batchtown, Illinois.

Annie died in 1915.

Children from first marriage: 3 sons, 1 daughter, 1 unknown infant.

John married Martha Bain Finney on 31 Oct 1916 in Calhoun County. She was the widow of William Finney.

Martha died in 1928.

Children from second marriage: None.

When he died in his sleep, John was 99 years, 10 months and 3 days old. He was survived by 3 children, Henry Cimmers, Margaret Meyer and Ben Cimmers, all of Iowa.

Visitation was held after 5 p.m. on 07 May 1960 at Imming Funeral Home in Brussels, Calhoun County, Illinois. A rosary was recited the following evening. Funeral services were conducted at 9 a.m. on the morning of 09 May 1960. Burial then took place at Wilson Cemetery.
