Ethel Belle Gough was the youngest daughter of Thomas J. Gough of Portadown, Ireland and Caroline Shippy of Elkhorn, Wisconsin. Ethel's parents married in 1876 and settled in Belvidere, Illinois, to raise their family. Ethel married Albert Harvey Smith on 19 Feb 1918 in Belvidere. While pregnant with their son, Robert George Smith, Albert fell victim to the flu pandemic of 1919 and died of pulmonary tuberculosis 5 months after his son was born. Later Ethel resided in Lincoln, Illinois, and married Otto Hembreiker. Some time after the death of Otto Hembreiker in 1977, Ethel came to live in the household of her son Robert and his wife Marguerite in the Dallas, Texas area. She died 19 Oct, 1984 at Mesquite Community Hospital in Mesquite, Texas following a lengthy illness. Survivors include daughter-in-law Marguerite Smith, two grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Robert Smith, four sisters and one brother.

In Belvidere, Illinois, she was a member of the First Baptist Church.
