Born July 8, 1929, in Charleston to Beverly and Fannie Adams Spence, he married Marilyn Harrell on Oct. 9, 1948, in Charleston. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Cheryl Carr of East Peoria; three brothers, Paul of Bethany, Harold of Charleston and Dale of Tuscola; one sister, Helen Sims of Fort Branch, Ind.; and one granddaughter.
Three sisters and one brother preceded him in death.
A World War II Army veteran, he was a member of the American Legion.
He retired in 1982 as a painter at Caterpillar Inc. after 34 years. He was a member of United Auto Workers Local 974 and Caterpillar Retirees Club.
He was a member of First Christian Church in Charleston and attended Faith United Methodist Church in East Peoria for 44 years. He was a former member of Peoria Horseshoe Club.
Burial will be in Fondulac Cemetery.
