When Walter M Baskin was born on December 25, 1922, in Mississippi, his father, Weldon, was 33 and his mother, Lucile, was 26. He had two brothers, Jack W. born 1918 and Bobby W. born 1929 and one sister Margaret D. born 1920. According to the 1930 Census the family was residing in Coahoma, Mississippi, in 1940 the family was living in Washington, Mississippi and would then reside in Vaiden, Mississippi. Walter attended classes for 2 years at Millsaps College, Jackson, Mississippi prior to enlisting in the Army Air Forces.

Walter M Baskin entered military service on 22 July 1942 enlisting at Jackson, Mississippi, assigned to the Air Corps Aviation Cadet Program.
Initially assigned to 34BG, 8AF USAAF. Transferred to 361FS, 356FG, 8AF USAAF. On a training flight Lt Baskin was engaged in simulated combat with another P51D aircraft. He was observed to slice off a wing and fall into a flat spin. He did approximately seven turns and hit in the mud flats of the Orwell River Suffolk, England, approximately 2 miles W. of Trimley St. Mary, Suffolk; approximate crash coordinates 51°58'44.39"N, 1°16'19.69"E . The cockpit of his plane burst into flames after it crashed. 13 February 1945. Killed in flying accident (KIFA) at the age of 22.
