Rev. Desmond Gibbs Ashley was a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church, and served in many Connecticut towns, including East Woodstock, Gales Ferry, Quarryville, South Glastonbury, Gardner's Lake, Voluntown and Mashapaug and was pastor of the Church at Lyme three times.

He was married three times, and is buried next to his second wife, Sophronia (Greene) Ashley, and a child, Francis. At his death he was survived by a wife, Mary and five children: two sons, Elisha and Wilbur, and three daughters, Mrs. Vienna Robbins, Mrs. Bertha Maynard of Lyme, and Mrs. Ella Champion of Norwich.
