My mom was born in 1945 nearing the end of WWII. Her dad, Adkin Crain was in New Port News, VA in the shipyard. He didn't know how to say my mom's name when he got the telegram. My mom went by Lathonne all her life.
My grandmother chose her name Winnona from a character in a book she read. Lathonne was a name that had been used by Faye's sister Ethel. Ethel's daughter, Lathonne died at 2 yrs old. The name came from the nurse that took care of Ethel while she was pregnant with Lathonne. The only living members of the family that have this name are me and one of Ethel's granddaughters. However, my mom was the only one to go by the name.
Mom died of cancer (breast to bone). She was a very strong woman who beat the odds. She lived her life to the fullest. She learned anything that she set her mind to and was always trying something new.
