LOGAN – May Gardner Cropper, known for many years to her family as "Gran", passed away peacefully on July 1, 2010, in Logan, Utah. She was born May 23, 1915 to Archie Ozro and Maline Glazier Gardner in Provo, Utah. She was close to, and had a special love for her siblings, Evan (Marjorie) Gardner, Owen (Lenore) Gardner, Cora (Jim) Jensen and their families. Her childhood was spent on the family farm near Delta, Utah, and later she appreciatively said, "they moved into town." May loved school and music and was an accomplished pianist. After high school, where she was valedictorian, she attended Brigham Young University and the L.D.S. Business College. As a young lady she filled two stake missions and then served 27 months as a full time missionary in Great Britain. One of her fondest mission memories was having the opportunity to play for President Heber J. Grant as he sang a solo while visiting England.
May met her future husband, Ladd R. Cropper, while in high school. She accompanied him once as he sang a solo in his seminary graduation. After her mission they dated at BYU and on March 24, 1939 they were married in the Salt Lake temple. Ladd preceded her in death on July 10, 2002. They were the parents of four daughters, Sylvia (Paul) Sorenson, Maline (Mike) Crockett, Camille Cropper, and Colleen (Kelly) Hawkes. During their marriage they lived in Santaquin, Hinckley, Reno and for the past forty-six years in Ogden, Utah. Ladd worked for the LDS Church Educational System and was also an accomplished soloist and director of many ward, stake, and community and Institute choruses. May was always at his side and was his accompanist for the many programs they developed. Together they had a special relationship with thousands of students.
May was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many teaching and leadership positions, including ten years as a temple worker in the Ogden Utah Temple. "Gran" was a grandmother to nineteen and a great-grandmother to thirty. She recently completed a multi-year project of crocheting fifty three afghans for her family. At ninety-five, May said she was "ready to move on." And was anxious to again be reunited with her sweetheart and her many friends and family who have passed on. We too, as a family, join in that comfort.
Funeral services celebrating May's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at the Lorin Farr Second Ward located at 480 7th Street, in Ogden, Utah. A viewing will be held Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Myers Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd. in Ogden, Utah. Friends and family may also call prior to the service from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at the Myers Evergreen Memorial Park in Ogden.
