William Langhorst was born in Rahden, Westphalia, Germany and came to America with his parents in 1851. He became engaged in the manufacture of tile & brick and later was the superintendent of the New Bremen Foundry & Machine Shop. He lived in New Bremen about 36 years (until 1887?) and then moved to Wapakoneta.

He was married January 28, 1858 to Mary Anna Fricke who died April 3, 1874. They had eight sons.

He married again in 1875 to Fredericke Anna Essman. They had five children.

His remains were brought to the home of his son, Edward Langhorst, in New Bremen.

He was buried in German Protestant Cemetery with Rev. Bertram conducting the services.
