Ethel was born in Chesire, Ohio in 1891 to John and Marry Ellen (Lemley) Ralph. She married Donald Blackburn in 1907. They raised seven children, through both World Wars and the great depression. At one time Mr. and Mrs. Blackburn had three sons in combat in World War 2. She was a devoted christian woman who had a huge charitable heart.
