Barbara Jean Stringer, age 83 passed away on Tuesday, November 2, 2021. She was born in Bimble, Kentucky, on November 26, 1937, the daughter of Senior and Marie Smith.

She was united in marriage to John Franklin Stringer on August 5, 1956, and during their 52-year marriage, they raised two sons.

She is survived by her sons; Tommy Stringer and Paul (Roxanne) Stringer, two granddaughters; Emily (Jordan) Allen and Hannah (Travis) Pace, five great grandchildren; Khloe Allen, Avery Allen, Connor Pace, John Pace, and Callie Ann Pace, along with a host of family and friends who mourn her passing.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; John Stringer, one brother; Alvin Smith, and one sister; Bettye Sue Evert.

Barbara attended Cumberland College and Union College, earning her bachelor's degree, and then completed her master's degree and rank 1 certification from the University of Kentucky. She taught high school social studies for 30 years before retiring in 1988. She then spent 25 years teaching history at Union College and Somerset Community College. She retired from teaching in 2014, ending a remarkable 55-year teaching career. She was dedicated to the education field and was loved and respected by students and colleagues alike.

Barbara was also a shining example of Christian service. She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher for over 50 years, volunteered in youth ministry, took an active role in WMU, and served in a variety of other capacities throughout the years. She was also a long-time member of the Gideons International Auxiliary and spent many years serving in various leadership capacities to help distribute Bibles around the world. She took her faith in God very seriously, always tried to live her faith in tangible ways, and always strived to be the hands and feet of Jesus.

Barbara was a devoted wife, a loving mother, a proud grandmother and great-grandmother, a committed educator, an exemplary Christian woman, and a true lady. She will be missed by all who knew her, but the wonderful memories of her remain.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 6th, between 5PM and 8PM in the chapel of the funeral home. Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 7th at 2PM at the Hickey Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the Elk Spring Cemetery.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Gideon Bible Memorial Plan.
