Garl Brown was the son of Charlie Brown and Mary Jane Rinker. He grew up in Huntington County, Indiana, but went to Detroit to work in the auto factories about 1910. Garl married Cora Coon 29 Nov. 1913 in Marion, Grant County, Indiana. About 1921 Garl and Cora relocated to Jordan Township, Antrim County, Michigan, where he was a farmer with a farm of 160 acres. Garl and Cora were the parents of three children. He was killed by lightning while putting his horses in the barn during a thunderstorm.
Garl is buried in the Coon Family plot.

"Lightning Kills Garl Brown" - Front page article, Charlevoix County Herald, East Jordan, Michigan, Fri. Aug. 24, 1928: "During heavy storm of Monday afternoon - Garl Brown, well-known farmer of Jordan Township was killed by lightning during the severe electrical storm Monday afternoon August 20th. Mr. Brown was assisting a crew of men harvesting oats at the Frank Lilah farm east of Chestonia. As the storm approached the team and wagon were drove into the barn, and had just got in when a bolt of lightning struck the barn, and in grounding hit Mr. Brown, killing him almost instantly. It also set fire to the barn. The workmen nearby extinguished the blaze and summoned a physician. The accident took place about 3:30 p.m. Garl Brown was born in Wells Co., Indiana Nov. 7, 1892. In 1913 he was united in marriage to Miss Cora Coon at Marion, Indiana. About seven years ago they came to this region, purchasing and locating on a 160 acre farm in Jordan Township. Mr. Brown is survived by the wife and three children, Margie, Robert and Bernadine. Funeral services were held from his late home Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. George Weaver of Petoskey. The remains were taken to Marion, Indiana, for burial."
