Burns Are Fatal To Richter Boy; Rites Saturday

Charles Morris Richter, 16 year old son of Dr. and Mrs. Carl M. Richter of 10 Chestnut St., Newville, who was critically burned Sunday afternoon in attempting exit from Carnegie Cave near Clevesburg, died about midnight Wednesday at the Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia.

The Richter boy had been transferred Tuesday from the Chambersburg Hospital to Temple University Hospital for treatment of second degree burns over nearly 60 percent of his body.

The youth would have been a junior at Big Spring High School this fall.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in Zion Lutheran Church at Newville. Rev. John Pretz Jr., the pastor, will officiate. Internment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery at Elizabethville.

Funeral arrangements are in charge of the Rearick Funeral Home.

Charles Morris Richter, the son of Dr. Carl M. and Anna Mae Uhler Richter, was born Feb. 1, 1951 in Carlisle. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.

In addition to his parents, survivors include a brother Edward and a sister Mary Ann, both at home.

Jerry L. Kyle, 15, son of Mrs. Paul E. Kye of Newville R. D. 2, and Nancy Jean Van Derlofske, 17 Newville R. D. 2, also students at Big Spring High School, had been with Charles in the Carnegie Cave Sunday afternoon but escaped without injury, although they were the object of a two hour search by rescuers before being located far back in the cave.

Young Richter was found outside the conduit exit about 3:45 p.m. by fireman and was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

The fatal accident occurred as the three young people were attempting to exit after exploring the cave only to find the conduit a mass of flames.
