New York Times, November 2, 1897:

-EX-CONVICT FINDS TREASURE-

It Was Buried in a Wisconsin Town by a Chicago Thief.

JUNEAU, Wis., Nov. 1.-Just before he was released from the State's prison at Waupun, Samuel D. Roby of the town of Elba, near here, won the confidence of a fellow-convict. The convict confessed that he was one of a gang of Chicago thieves, who, being unable to dispose of the booty in Chicago, took it to Elba and buried it on a farm.

Following the convict's descriptions. Roby has been digging on the farm in question, and has already recovered nineteen gold watches and a number of rings and diamond pins, the whole being valued at between $2,000 and $5,000. Roby says the best of the booty is yet to be found. He will turn over the property to the owners upon proper identification.

The prisoner who disclosed the information is W. T. J. Blacerby, and he is serving a four-year sentence for a burglary committed in the town of Elba.
