Originally enlisted into Company B 16th Georgia Volunteer Infantry. Company B was organized at Jackson County GA by Captain Abner Monroe Reynolds and was known as the "Center Hill Guards." (Carded records of James R Baird are intermixed with those of J R Beard of Co D who died Jan 8, 1863.)

Baird was selected for service in the 3d Battalion Georgia Sharpshooter Regiment upon its formation May 1863. Alternately listed as J R Baird, James R Baird, J R Beard.

Captured at High Bridge, April 6, 1865. Imprisoned at Point Lookout Maryland April 14, 1865. Released on Oath of Allegiance to United States subscribed and sworn at Point Lookout, Md June 24, 1865. Appears on Oath as follows:
J R Baird, Corp 3 Bat Ga
Place of Residence: Jackson Co. GA
