Patterson Proudfit was born December 8, 1804, in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, the son of the Rev. David Proudfit and Sarah Patterson. He married Sarah Speer on December 30, 1830, near New Concord, Muskingum County, Ohio. They were the parents of 13 children: David Wallace, Rebecca Boggs, Sarah Patterson, William S., David, Deborah S., Mary Jane, James Boggs, John Patterson, Martha J., Elizabeth B., Annie M., and an unnamed infant boy.
