Eugene J. Potkay, 88, of Mattapoisett, passed away on Friday, June 4, 2010, at St. Luke's Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Alberta M. (Sylvia) Potkay, and son of the late Pawel and Anna (Smith) Potkay. Eugene was born in New Bedford and moved to Fairhaven, becoming a carpenter, before serving as a See-Bee with the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he married Alberta and they enjoyed 64 years of marriage, and had 3 children. They traveled extensively with their kids, camping around the country in campers that he built. In their retirement, they attended years of See-Bee reunions in several states, and continued to travel, but found cruising more to their liking. Eugene taught in the New Bedford school system for 38 years, starting in the southend, then moving on to Keith Jr. High School when it opened, until his retirement in 1990. Throughout his time as a teacher of drafting and woodworking, he continued working as a carpenter to the delight of many. He also taught adult education to new immigrants learning English and our culture. Eugene is survived by his wife, Alberta; 3 children, Patricia A. Wallace of Portsmouth, NH, Eugene J. Potkay, Jr., and his wife, Wendy of Cedar Knowles, NJ, and Edward P. Potkay and his wife, Joanne of Fairhaven; a sister, Rosalie Brown of Fairhaven; 6 grandchildren, Tim, Jenny, Erica, Rene, Kyle and Kelsey; and 5 great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Anna Lajmuc, Boleslaw Potkay and Mieczyslaw Potkay. Visiting hours to which relatives and friends are invited are Sunday, 2-4 P.M. and 7-9 P.M. His funeral Mass and burial in MA National Cemetery, are private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Hospice Unit at St. Luke's Hospital, New Bedford. Arrangements are by Machnowski - Schick Funeral Home, 472 Ashley Boulevard, New Bedford.
