Miss Maron J. Craig, 94, of Pittston, formerly of Hughestown, died on Sunday, July 19, 2009 at the Laurels, Kingston, following a lengthy illness. Miss Craig was born in Hughestown, a daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Meytrott Craig. She was a graduate of Pittston High School, Class of 1933, and Empire Beauty School, Wilkes-Barre, in 1963. She had been employed in the grocery business for several years. She had also worked in an area war plant during World War II. Prior to her retirement in 1982, she had worked in the garment industry for 34 years at various facilities including Square Apparel, P&R Apparel and Val Sportswear. As a licensed beautician and cosmetologist, she also owned and operated Maron's Beauty Shop, Pittston, for 17 years, also retiring in 1982. Maron was a former member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Pittston, where she taught in the primary department of the Sunday School and was a member of the J.O.Y. Club for many years. In high school, she had been a member of the YMCA Girls Swim Team and the Hi-Y Girls. She had also been a Girl Scout Leader. She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Hughestown, and had been a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union. In her spare time, she loved to knit, making gloves, hats and afghans and did other handicrafts. She was preceded in death by her sister, Romayne Frick. Surviving are several cousins. A memorial service will be held on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the H. Merritt Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 211 Luzerne Ave., West Pittston, with the Rev. David A. Heckler interim pastor, St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Hughestown, officiating. Friends may call on Friday from 7 until the time of service. Private interment will be in the Hughestown Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Center & Rock Streets, Hughestown, 18640; or to St. John's Lutheran Church, 9 Wood St., Pittston, 18640.
