John A. Birch is Called

Glenn County Pioneer Dies In Chico Wednesday

John A. Birch died at this home in Chico on Wednesday morning, aged 89 years, 11 months and 22 days.
Mr. Birch leaves a widow, the wife of his youth, with whom he had lived for 73 years and more, 73 years last September. There are also six children to join the widow in mourning the loss of a parent. They are Mrs. Ingraham of Chico, Mrs. McKaig of Corning, Mrs. Gould of Hotalling, L.R. Birch of Corning, J.W. Birch of Orland and F. C. Birch of Marshfield, Oregon.
The funeral was held yesterday, Thursday, afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, from the Wesfall mortuary chapel in Chico, and the remains were brought to Orland and interred in the Odd Fellows cemetery, by the side of the remains of a son who passed away and was buried there a number of years ago.
Mr. Birch was born in Ohio, and grew there to manhood, marrying while still at the old home place, at the early age of eighteen. Taking his bride he moved to Illinois, where three children were born, and in 1871 came to California, Mr. Birch taking up a homestead about eight miles southeast of Orland, where the other children making up the family were added. In the home of Mr. and Mrs. also was born what since has become the Orland Methodist church, and for several years services were held in the Birch home. Later , on a piece of land donated by him, a regular building was erected, which served both as church and parsonage. After living on the ranch some ten years, Mr. Birch and family moved into Orland, then a straggling little hamlet, and ten years later moved to Chico, where they have made their home ever since. - Transcribed by E.
