He was perhaps the son of Thomas and Anne (Cook) Barnard of Lowestoft, Suffolk, England. He was the first husband of Eleanor (Mnu). According to historical records he was killed by Indians at Amesbury in 1677. He and his brother Robert came to New England in the 1630's. He was one of the original proprietors of Nantucket Island, later selling his interest to his brother Robert
