Son of Nathan and Margaret Coon. Nathan's father, Conrad, was the first settler in Irish Ripple, later Newport, Beaver County, later Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. John was a Sergeant in Co C, 103rd Regiment, during the Civil War. He was captured during the battle of Plymouth, North Carolina, and spent nine months in Andersonville Prison. He was married Dec 30, 1877 to Sarah Ann Wardare.
