OBITUARY
C. Arthur Beebe, 64, former editor and owner of the Candor Courier and former town clerk, died on Friday, May 3, at Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, Pa. The son of Will L. and May Beebe, he was born in Earlville on May 5, 1898, and moved to Candor with his family in 1899 when his father and grandfather, H. A. Beebe, established the Courier. The elder Mr. Beebe died shortly after establishment of the paper, and Will Beebe continued as editor and owner until his death on June 17, 1934. Arthur, who had been associated with the paper from boyhood, assumed the ownership and was editor and publisher of the Courier until November 1952 when he sold the business to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fox. The reason was given in his "Ramblin' Around" column of November 6, 1952: "... The old man probably feels worse about this change than anyone else. It's been his life and the Courier has most surely been a Beebe tradition. However, health "... is what finally caused the decision to sell" However, his deep interest in the work continued and he often assisted with typesetting, writing, and press operation during the Fox ownership and since Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Muir purchased the Courier in November 1956.
For 27 Years, Mr. Beebe served as town clerk for the Town of Candor. He was appointed to the office in 1934 to fill the unexpired term of his father, and was elected thereafter for 13 consecutive two-year terms. In July 1961 he announced that "due to other commitments, health, and a desire for a little more travel in summer," he would not be a candidate for re-election to the term beginning in January 1962.
Known affectionately as "Stub" by his many friends, he was an ardent fisherman, baseball fan, and Candor booster. He was always active in community affairs. He participated in the organizing of the Candor Community Club and served as a president of the club. He was instrumental in setting up the first Community Club Mardi Gras, in October 1952, as a project to preserve the two mill dams in Candor.
Arthur was a former chief of the Candor Fire Company, and a director of the Candor Telephone Company. He was a member of Allen Memorial Baptist Church and of Candor Lodge 411, F&AM. He was a graduate of Candor High School, class of 1916, and served with the American Red Cross in World War I.
Recently he had been affiliated with the Engrossing Department of the State Assembly in Albany.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Dorcas Beebe, and a daughter, Miss Joan Beebe, both of Candor; a sister, Mrs. Lionel Stevens of Knowville, Pa.; a nephew, Karl Stevens of Candor; a great-niece and great-nephew, Kay and Charles Stevens of Candor; and several cousins;
Funeral services were held at the Miller Funeral Home on Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. Urban F. Cline officiating. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery, Candor.
