Gerald Vernon "Jerry" Lee
Gerald "Jerry" Vernon Lee, 81, of Davenport, passed away at his home with his family by his side, after a courageous battle with cancer, on Friday, July 9, 2010.
Jerry was born on February 3, 1929 in Wever, IA, the son of William Joseph and Glennie Lucille (Harmon) Lee, Sr.
At the age of nine months, his family moved to Pittsburgh (sic) [Pittsburg], KS where he was raised.
He was united in marriage to Lora Yvonne Hughes on March 18, 1953 in Davenport.
Mr. Lee was a skilled carpenter and welder.
He owned and operated Dingo's Diner in Davenport and retired from truck driving for Robin Hood Flour (International Multi Foods Corp.) in 1974 when he moved to Randolph County, Ark., where he farmed and raised cows and pigs. He moved back to Davenport in 1989.
He enjoyed dancing to country music, hunting, fishing and riding his Harley. He also loved mowing grass and helping others.
His greatest passion was his time with his family whom he loved more than life itself. Jerry was known by many people as Grandpa or G'Paw and was thought of as a father figure to them.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Lora, Davenport, daughters: Vicky (Kenneth) Kopf, II, Walcott, IA, Diana (Timothy) Jansen, Davenport, Kathleen (Tom) Garrison, Pocahontas, Ark.; son, Jerry Allen "Bud" (Julia) Lee, Albuquerque, NM; grandchildren: Robert (Trisha) Kapinski, Shane (Stacy) Kapinski, Michael (Nikki) Kapinski, Jessica Kopf Thelen, Jennifer (Brian) Bruce, Geno (Stephanie) Holmes, Michael Jansen, Gerald (Shana) Lee, Christopher (Amanda) Lee, Jonathan Lee, Eric (Shelley) Garrison, Kathryn Garrison, Amanda, Megan and Brenna; great-grandchildren: Steven, Anthony, Mariah, Madisyn, Aubryanna, Sabrina, Aden, Austin, Samantha, James, Hunter, Melody, Stormy, Morgan, Noah and a new baby due July 20th; sister, Ann (Merle) Endorf, Davenport, numerous nieces and nephews and his beloved cockatiel, Homer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Violet, Peggy, Shirley and Bertha and brothers, Virgil and Bobby.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to his niece, Donna Beal for the meals and cleaning she provided to his family during his illness. Also, they would like to thank his many great friends of the Vietnamese communities in Davenport and Lawrenceville, GA including, Mike, Helen, Tina and Tammy and their families in Davenport and Hai, Hong, Tung, Thu, Phat and Mai and their families in Georgia, for the many kindnesses they showed to his family throughout the years.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at 2:30 pm at The Runge Mortuary.
Visitation will be Monday from 4-9 pm at mortuary.
Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to the family.
