Murdered by John Jarvis. Jarvis felt himself wronged in a business transaction. Bonney had bought a farm Jarvis had been dispossessed of. Bonney and two carpenters were engaged in building a house there on Tuesday, September 18, when Jarvis approached them with a shotgun, saying he had been hunting. He and Bonney had an apparently friendly conversation, with Jarvis offering Bonney a drink from the whisky bottle he carried. As Bonney took the bottle to his lips, Jarvis discharged buckshot into him, killing him instantly. On January 11, 1884, Jarvis was hung in the jailyard at Princess Anne, the first there in many years.

Claudius Washington Bonney was from London Bridge Township, Princess Anne County. At age 19 he enlisted in the Confederate Army. He was a private in the 15th Virginia Cavalry, then transferred to the 20th Battalion of Virginia Artillery.
