George Charles, 80, Early Day Settler, Dies Here Sunday
Services were at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Methodist church for George Thomas Charles, 80-year-old pioneer of this community. Brodace Elkins preached the funeral sermon and arrangements were in charge of Pitcher Funeral Home. Burial was in the Alfalfa cemetery. Mr. Charles died Sunday at 11:30 p.m.
Born in Knoxville, Tenn., Nov. 30, 1870, Charles moved with his family to Ennis, Texas. He came to Oklahoma in 1904 and farmed in this community until his health failed several years ago. He has been in poor health the past two years.
He married Sally Griggs and to this union four sons and a daughter were born. While the children were quite young she died.
Later he was married to Leota Elliott of the Swan Lake community. She also preceded him in death. He was a member of the Methodist church here at the time of his death.
Survivors include four sons, Roy, Salinas, Calif., and Buford, Ernest and George of this place; one daughter, Mrs. Mable Patterson, Roseburg, Oregon, and a brother Glenn Charles, Oklahoma City. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
Glenn Charles and a niece, Mrs. Carl Holland of Oklahoma City were her for the funeral. Roy and Mrs. Patterson have been at their father's bedside but recently returned to their homes. Other members of the family attended the funeral.
