LEWIS HEFFNER PASSED AWAY SUDDENLY YESTERDAY
Pioneer Resident of City Fell a Victim of Heart Trouble Sunday Afternoon and Died Before Assistance Could Reach Him. Had Attended Meeting Earlier in the Day.
WAS IDENTIFIED WITH GROWTH OF CITY.
The entire city was shocked last evening when it was learned shortly after 5 o'clock that Lewis Heffner, one of the best known and wealthiest mem of the city, and had died suddenly at his home on South Anderson street, and seldom has there been a death here that has caused such universal sorrow.
DEATH CAME SUDDENLY.
About a year ago Mr. Heffner suffered a severe attack of heart trouble while at Webster lake, but since then he has been in good health. Yesterday afternoon he attended the men's meeting at the tabernacle and was very much interested in this. Returning to his home about 6 o'clock he had just seated himself in his favorite chair when his call for help brought members of the family to his side and before a physician could he summoned he had passed away.
Although he has always been a faithful church man and very deeply interested in the welfare of not only the various church but of the entire city, it was not until the recent tabernacle meeting that he took a definite stand.
HISTORY OF LIFE.
Mr. Heffner was born in Berks county, Pennsylvania Oct 5th 1839, and received only a common school education. Later he assisted his father in a blacksmith shop at that place. In 1860 he came to Indiana and after living in various place for a short time, started a saw mill in Tipton county. In 1879 he moved the saw mill to Elwood, then only a village, and for years operated the only mill in this vicinity being identified with the clearing of this section of the county. Later he added a planing mill and engaged extensively in the lumber and coal business. In 1911 he built the garage which is now occupied by Mr. Dawson.
HELD LARGE INTERESTS.
Although it is impossible to tell exactly the intent of Mr. Heffner's interests until the final settlement of his estate, he was rated at about $150,000. He owned extensive interests in Arkansas and at the time of his death was engaged in a sale of 7000 acres of this land.
Out of a family of seven children only two of them, Mrs. C.L. Bruce and Mrs. L.W. Whipple, survive the father. His wife died almost two years ago. A nephew, Ed Heffner and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. James Heffner, residing on South Anderson street and a sister, Mrs. William Rissmiller residing at 2524 South A street.
The funeral will be held at the Methodist Protestant church Wednesday afternoon with Rev. H.L. Avery in charge assisted by Rev. W.R. Rarton and the Masonic lodge. Interment will occur in the city cemetery.
In the death of Mr. Heffner the city has lost one of its prominent citizens and one whose influence will always be felt in the city for which he did so much good during his life time.
