Letters written home by James from 1861 through 1865 tell of his experiences during the war as well as others of The Patrick Boys.
James was captured at Spotsylvania in May 1864 and was confined first at Point Lookout, MD, until July 1864, then Elmira, NY, from August until mid-October, and finally back to Point Lookout the rest of the month until he was exchanged at Venus Point, Savannah River, Georgia on November 15, 1864. He returned to Patrick County by March 2, 1865 and rejoined the army at Dublin eight days later. The regiment disbanded on April 11, 1865 and James returned home.
He married and lived in Kibler Valley where his grandparents lived and where he was buried after his death.
