Aldine Beery Darnell

Lewisburg-Aldine Beery "Curly" Darnell, a longtime Lewisburg resident, passed away Oct. 22, 2002, at the age of 92.

She was the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Dewitt A. Beery. Rev. Beery was at one time pastor of the Lewisburg Methodist Church.

Born in Summit Point, Mrs. Darnell lived as a child in a number of towns and cities in West Virginia and Virginia, where her father was called as minister.

She graduated from Emory and Henry University in 1930 and subsequently worked as a laboratory technician at the University of Virginia hospital in Charlottesville as part of the medical team that discovered the blood-clotting properties of vitamin K.

She married Dr. Leslie M. Lisle in 1933 and they had two children, Leslie and Beth. This marriage ended in divorce.

She was the widow of Joseph Marion Darnell, also of Lewisburg, whom she married in 1961. Mrs. Darnell taught English and psychology for several years at Greenbrier college in Lewis-burg and after that was head librarian of the Greenbrier County Library in the same city. In the 1950s she was Director of Religious Education for the Thomas Jefferson Unitarian Church in Charlottesville, VA. Mrs. Darnell was known for her gentle nature, her willingness to help others and her great love of singing.

She is survived by two children, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Oct. 26, in the Little Fork Episcopal Church in Rixeyville, VA. Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Greenbrier County Library in Lewisburg.
