Husband of Cynthia J. Revis Hunter. Father of Harriet Hunter. Captain of the 57 NC Infantry in the Confederate Army and first elected Sheriff of Madison County NC (served from 1854-1857 and 1860-1861). Have a newspaper clipping picture of his stone from 2003 clean up and it is identical to his Daughter and son in law's stone--Harriet and John Flynn. July 2010 the stone is missing? The cemetery is over grown again, and on posted property with unfriendly neighbors. The owner of the land could not be located.

From the French Broad News, September 14, 1911:
Hiram Hunter died at his home on Hunter Branch Tuesday evening at 6 p.m., and will be buried at old Bull Creek Thursday evening at 1 o'clock by the Masonic Order. He was a good citizen and served the county as Sheriff before the Civil War. A large number of children survive him, among whom are, J.H and Z.H. Hunter, well known over the county.

He married Polly Keith in 1877. She died between 1880 and 1900.
