Catharine was born on a farm near Brandowill [Brandonville?], Preston County, VA [now WV] and is believed to be the second daughter of Jehu SMITH and Julia Ann CARROLL. Catharine passed away on the McCarthy farm in the Farmington, Fayette County, PA area.
She and Matthais were second cousins, sharing great grandparents in their Smith line. They married on 25 Jan 1866, and went on to produce thirteen children.
