ANNA CHRISTENSON FENDALL Born 3-14-1863, died 4-28-1944. She was one of five children of Hans, 10-20-1907, and Karen Kristine Christenson, 1830-2-1919. Her parents were married in Denmark, 2-28-1854, and emigrated to America in 1858 when their sons George and Nels were four and two, respectively. When the small family landed in New York, George, perhaps too intrigued with the wonders of the new world, wandered away from his mother while she was waiting for her husband to complete the formalities of disembarkation. After considerable searching, and much distress on the part of his parents, he was found and reunited with his family.
I don't know if Mother was born in Iowa, but do know that she lived there at one time, and think they came to Oregon from that state. She said that she found it hard to accustom herself to being "shut in" by the hills of their new home. I judge from conversations with her that they must have come West when Mother was ten to twelve. When she was in her early teens, she was making her own clothes as well as those of her mother and her younger sister Sarah. In addition, she had to greet people who came to their house, since Grandmother clung to her native Danish and was reluctant to learn English.
