Death of Mrs. R. J. Nelson, Sr.

After a long and lingering illness, Mrs. Jeanette Elizabeth Nelson, in her 61st year, passed away Monday at 1 o'clock, her bedside being surrounded by her devoted sons and daughters who in their grief and sorrow tenderly and lovingly watched each fleeting breath. Though Mrs. Nelson has been ill for almost a year, her condition being critical, yet when the end came and death robbed the aged mother of a devoted daughter and the sons and daughters of a mother who in her young womanhood had the rearing of the fatherless, her whole life being given to them.

Mrs. Nelson was Miss Jeanette [sic] Elizabeth Newman. On March 12th, 1873, she married to Mr. Robert J. Nelson and to their union were born to them the grief stricken children who are today mourning the loss of a mother.

Mrs. Nelson was a member of the Methodist church, having united in her young girlhood.

Eight years ago into her care came a mother, Mrs. S. E. Newman, and to her, as to her children she has given beautiful and loving devotion.

To mourn her loss are four daughters, Mrs. B. D. Hodges, Mrs. R. C. Sparks, Mrs. J. K. Briggs of Monroe; Mrs. Geo. H. Powell, of Detroit, Mich.; three sons, Mr. R. J. Nelson, Monroe; Mr. J. L. Nelson, Washington, D. C.; Mr. W. H. Nelson, of New Orleans.

The funeral obsequies were held this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at her late residence, Wood and Jackson streets. Rev. T. H. Morris conducted the services. A large concourse of friends gathered to pay a last tribute and bringing floral offerings, the casket was shielded in a coverlid of the fragrant exotics.

Rev. Mr. Morris read passages from the 39th and 90th Psalm after which he paid beautiful tribute to her daughter and mother-love which had been the almost absorbing happiness of her life. Mrs. Nelson's favorite songs, "Some Day We'll Understand" and "Asleep With Jesus," was beautifully sung by Miss Zola Young, Mrs. J. M. Keller, accompanist. After prayer the casket was borne out by the pall bearers, the funeral cortege wending its way to City Cemetery, where all that was mortal of Mrs. Nelson, was laid to rest by the side of her husband who had years before crossed over the river of Death.

The pall bearers were: Messrs. Chas. Easterling, M. F. George, H. D. Briggs, A. Bernstein, A. L. Harrington, C. E. Oakley, O. Easterling, A. Sholars, S. Bourke.

Honorary pall bearers: Messrs. W. M. Ruffin, Jonas Meyer, T. G. Easterling, W. L. Smith, T. Sullivan, J. D. Oakley, Theo. Marx, Chas. Kramer, Gahoula, Drs. W. L. Jones, I. J. Newton, J. Q. Graves.
