Retired Mount Union Dentist Dies
Dr. Samuel Bruce Fleming, prominent Mount Union retired dentist, died on Friday, Dec. 13, 1963, at his home, 121 West Market Street, following an extended illness. He was 86. Dr. Fleming was born in Shade Valley on April 15, 1877, a son of Robert Morton and Caroline (Watters) Fleming. He was united in marriage to Martha M. Crouse of Shade Valley on Feb. 27, 1908, at Huntingdon. His wife preceded him in death on April 24, 1958. He attended schools in Shade Valley and Shade Gap and also Rockhill Normal. He taught school in Shade Valley for four years and then wa graduated from Medico Ghirugici College, Philadelphia, in 1906 with a degree in dentistry. He practiced dentistry in Saltillo from 1907 to 1919 and then moved to Mount Union where he followed his professional practice until 1957 when he retired due to ill health. Dr. Fleming was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Mount Union. He was an ardent Democrat. Survivors include three children: Dr. Robert M. Fleming, Mount Union; Francis F. Fleming, Shade Valley and Mrs. Charles (Helen) Swope, Mount Union. Seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, being preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers. Funeral services will be held at St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Mount Union, on Monday, Dec. 16, at 10 a.m. The Rev. Father Joseph tomko will officiate and interment will be made in St. Catherine's Catholic Cemetery, Shirleysburg. The rosary will be recited at the Clark funeral home, Mount Union on Sunday evening at 8 o'clock. Friends will be received at the funeral home after noon on Sunday.
