Political Scientist. Robert Weldon Cooper, who went by R. Weldon Cooper and Weldon Cooper, was Robert Kent Gooch Professor Emeritus of Government and Foreign Affairs at the University of Virginia. Cooper joined the faculty of the University of Virginia in 1947 and was Associate Director and then Director of the Bureau of Public Administration and later Director of the Institute of Government. Prolific author of books, articles, and monographs, including Municipal Police Administration in Texas (1938); Municipal Government and Administration in Alabama (1940); Metropolitan County: A survey of Government in the Birmingham Area (1949); Research, Education, and Regionalism: The Bureau of Public Administation of the University of Alabama (co-author,1949); Virginia Government and Politics (co-editor, 1976). The Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service at the University of Virginia is named in his honor. The Center, among other functions, provides research, assistance and training for state and local officials in Virginia.
