Ripon - Louis Barkley Snedigar, son of an early - day Stanislaus County pioneer, died Sunday at his Ripon home after a long illness. He was 78.

A native of Stanislaus County, Snedigar was the son of Thomas Fielding Snedigar, who came by wagon train to Stanislaus County in 1852. He grew to prominence in the county, farming a large wheat ranch, part of which is now the site of Riverbank. Thomas Snedigar later sold his Riverbank interests and farmed 33 acres in Modesto - the site today of the McHenry Village Shopping Center.

Louis Snedigar was a 40 - year employee of Nestles in Ripon. He was a member of the United Brethren in Christ church in Modesto.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Jess Snedigar; sons Gene Mondo of Oakdale and Gordon Snedigar of Los Altos; daughter, Louise Scheideman of Lodi; sister, Mary Sehestedt of Grass Valley; brother, Irvin Snedigar of Modesto and eight grandchildren.

Visitation will be held 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. today at Ripon Memorial Chapel. A graveside service is scheduled at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Oakdale Citizens' Cemetery.
