During the Civil War, Isham's sympathies were with the Union.On December 1, 1864 Isham went to Cleveland, Tennessee where he enrolled in Company K, 5th Regiment, of the Tennessee Mounted Infantry. He was injured in a Battle at Elijay, Georgia.* Due to the injury, he was blinded in his right eye. He was a farmer for more than 30yrs. in Benton co. Arkansas. The 1880 census lists him as living in Wallace township. The 1890 census lists his residence as Nebo, on Declaration for pension. He was the Postmaster of Nebo ( later called Gravette ) from December 24th, 1897 to January 30th, 1901. He moved his family to Texas sometime between 1902-1904.

Overview: Organized at Cleveland, Nashville, Calhoun and Chattanooga, Tenn., September 23, 1864. Attached to District of the Etowah, Dept. of the Cumberland, and garrison duty in that District and at Dalton and Marietta, Ga., till July, 1865.

Skirmish at McLemore's Cove, Ga., February 1, 1865. Expedition from Dalton to Coosawattie River and Spring Place, Ga., April 1-4. Mustered out July 17, 1865.
