On May 1, 1848, he married widow Rebecca W. Hatter, née Ward. She brought children to the relationship, some of whom adopted the name Williams. In 1860, he was a machinist presumably living in Newberry Township, York County. Later in life, he lived in Philadelphia, although one Internet site claims he died in Goldsboro, York County. He stood 5' 10" tall and had dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted and enrolled in Carlisle on June 9, 1864, and assigned to Co. B, 87th Pa Inf, at the rank of private. Shot in the left shoulder at the 3rd battle of Winchester (Opequon) September 19, 1864, costing him part of his shoulder blade and making it forever impossible to lift his arm. Discharged on a surgeon's certificate per general order on June 3, 1865. Rebecca said of her husband, "He went to the army a man and came home a wreck in body and mind."
