HIRAM UHL - About a month ago, Mr. Hiram Uhl of Nachusa suffered a stroke of paralysis, which attacked his left side, and owing to advancing age and enfeebled health from illness of a year ago, was unable to rally from the attack, adn about six o'clock Tuesday evening, Jan. 11, 1898, he breathed out the last of along and useful life. Mr. Uhl was born Sept. 21, 1828 at Hampton PA, but removed in early boyhood, with his parents, to Allegany cunty, MD where he lived until 24 years of age, in the meantime having been married to Miss Maggie Wilhelm who removed with him to Lee County in 1852, and died here six years later, leaving four children, two of who soon follwed their mother. Mr. Uhl, on his arrival, purchased from the government a tract of land in South Dixon twonship, which by steady industry and frugality he developed into one of the finest farms in that vicinity. Mr. Uhl was a second time married, returning to Cumberland MD for his wife, Miss Nancy J. Hughes who with four daughters survive to morn the loss of a kind husband and father. The surviving children are; Of the first family, Mrs. Mary A. Smothers of Nebraska and Mrs. Ella M. Buchanan of oregon; of the second family; Mrs. Chaucey F. Hart of the home farm and Bertha A., Eva A., and Grace G., at home in Nachusa, the family having rented the farm and retired to the village in 1889. MR. Uhl was a clear headed farmer and business man and a valuable,public-spirited citizen of his township, respected and honored by his neighbors; and had been for many years an active member of the Lutheran church. The funeral will be held in the Nachusa church at one o'clock Friday afternoon.

Note from Marikay Mestad - Hiram was a teamster and farmer. He moved to Section 13 of SOuth Dixon Twp. in 1852 where he farmed until 1860, then moved into Dixon and engaged in the milling business. He moved to South Dixon Twp. again and in 1889 rented the land and retired to Nachusa.
