Born December 7, 1934 at West Point, Iowa the daughter of Leo and Dorothy (Pannenberg) Neuweg. On November 16, 1957 at Fort Madison, Iowa she married Stanford A. Garrels. He preceded her in death on February 10, 2006.
Survivors include her son Greg (wife Cathy) Garrels of Fort Madison, Iowa, three granddaughters Darian, Hallie and Reagan. Doris is also survived by her twin brother Dennis Neuweg of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother Marvin Neuweg and one sister Lucy Parks.
Doris was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in West Point and the Altar and Rosary Society of the church. She was a graduate of Catholic Central High School in Fort Madison. She retired from Sheaffer Pen Company with over 40 years of service. Doris loved animals and above all her granddaughters.
Friends may call after 1:00 p.m. Friday at the Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in West Point where there will be a parish rosary recited at 3:00. The family will meet with friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home with a Christian Wake service at 7:00 p.m.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday August 3, 2013 at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in West Point with Fr. Dennis Hoffman as Celebrant.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in West Point.
