Simon was a farmer from Biglick township in Hancock County. He enlisted in the Army at age 19, in 1861. He fought in all of the Ohio 21st's battles and was discharged in 1864 after 3 years service. He re-enlisted after a short time and rejoined the 21st regiment. After surviving so many battles unharmed, Simon was shot by a member of his own regiment while on pickett duty, and died the next day. His body was returned home and he is buried in Biglick township. His brother Samuel also served in the same company, and he died of disease in 1862.
