The first of nine children born to John C and Ester (Terry, aka Terriy) Burris of Surry Co NC, late of Liberty Twp, Highland Co OH, Rebecca married Bowater Sumner on 10 Dec 1777 at Tom's Creek Quaker Friends Meeting House, then in Surry Co NC.

Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, 1936, Vol I, NC:
"1777, 12, 10. Bowater, Surry Co., s Robert, m Rebeckah Burras."

Rebecca was the mother of ten children, five sons and five daughters. Several of these children left the Quaker faith.

In 1806, Bowater and Rebecca were granted certificates of membership at Miami MM in Warren Co OH. Later, they moved to Fairfield MM in Highland Co OH.

Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol I, Pg 170 and Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy:
"The name was changed to Westfield Meeting House from Tom's Creek Meeting House, when the monthly meeting was established in 1786."

In 1771, the northeastern part of Rowan Co became Surry Co.

Depending on the source, the name Burris has different spellings: Burras, Burross are but two variations. For the ease of matching to more recent ancestors, I am keeping the name as Burris on my memorials.
