He was the son of Theodore Charles and Phebe (Hergert) Tyrrell. The family moved often while he was growing up, but was always in the area of Shawano County and Antigo in Langlade County.

During World War II he was a flight engineer. He became a Prisoner of War in Germany when his plane was shot down. Because of his strong will and determination, and his steadfast faith in God, he survived.

He married Elsie in Antigo, Wisconsin on August 20, 1949. They started to raise their family in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and later moved to Woods Road in Franklin Wisconsin. They had 4 boys. Theodore, Thomas, James and John.
