William M. Chase, for a long time a resident of Baltimore, died, at the age of 82 years, at his residence on Dorchester Heights, Boston, Mass., last week. He was one of the first to answer the call of President Lincoln, and enlisted for three months in one of the Massachusetts regiments. Becoming disabled at the end of his term, he was made brigade sutler, and did a large business with the Army of the Potomac. After the war he settled in Baltimore, and in connection with Mr. D. Bachrach he published a large collection of views of scenery in Maryland and West Virginia. He made hosts of friends, and was for a long time a teacher in the Sunday school at the House of Refuge. He resided here until 1891, when his relatives in Massachusetts prevailed upon him to spend the remainder of his days in his native State. He was one of the oldest members of the First Congregational Church of Baltimore.

William Moody Chase was the son of March Chase and Hepsibah Gleason. His wife, Sarah, and photographer William Ashman's mother Mary, where sisters. Based on my research, it seems that Chase and fellow Baltimore photographer of a later genearation, William Foss Shorey (1833-1911), may share a common ancestor, early Massachusetts settler Aquila Chase (1626-1670).
His grandparents, Moody Chase (1723-1815) and Elizabeth Hale Chase, are buried in Center Cemetery, Middlexex Co., Mass.
